Dear Editor,

As Louisiana looks to strengthen its economy and energy security, offshore wind presents a smart opportunity for economic growth and job creation. With over $10 billion in private investment already fueling the U.S. offshore wind supply chain, this industry is proving to be a driver of local business development, manufacturing expansion, and workforce growth.

Louisiana is in a prime position to pursue offshore wind projects. According to statistics from the Louisiana Offshore Wind Roadmap website, our state has the fourth-highest technical offshore wind resource potential in the country: The Bayou State already has the infrastructure, geography and skilled workforce needed, and nearly “25 [percent] of all US contracts by volume in offshore wind are already going to businesses in Louisiana and other Gulf states.” And there is room for Louisiana to grow in this sector.

Offshore wind increases America’s energy independence by harnessing a domestic, abundant resource. It strengthens our electric grid, protects consumers from volatile energy prices, and ensures that our energy dollars stay here at home rather than flowing to foreign adversaries. This is the kind of common-sense, all-of-the-above energy strategy that puts American workers and businesses first.

However, realizing offshore wind’s full potential requires leadership. Cutting red tape and streamlining permitting will allow projects to move forward efficiently. Encouraging private investment in ports, shipbuilding, and manufacturing will ensure that Louisiana remains at the forefront of this booming industry.

America should lead, not follow, when it comes to energy innovation. Offshore wind offers a real opportunity to bolster our economy, strengthen our grid, and secure our energy future. It’s time for policymakers to embrace this opportunity and ensure Louisiana benefits from this growing industry.

Sincerely,

Will Hardy

State Director, Conservatives for Clean Energy Louisiana
