When I was in Concordia Parish last Saturday, I had sat down to draft a piece on who I was voting for and why. One of my friends had suggested to hold it back in case something happened this week and Wednesday our prayers from a few weeks ago were answered 6-3 by the US Supreme Court..

Yesterday, Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry confirmed my trip to the Vidalia courthouse on Saturday, May 2 is still on to early vote for US Senate & the open Public Service Commissioner along with 5 constitutional amendments. Early voting stays open from May 2nd until Saturday, May 9th other than Sunday, May 3 for the May 16th elections here in Louisiana.

I am not a lawyer, Louisiana legislator, or God so I don’t know when we will vote for US Congress, which Republicans will be running for US Congress in which open seat or what district I will live in. I do know that is highly unlikely that the place I’m writing this from on Thursday in Ascension Parish will be in the same congressional district with Concordia Parish where I drafted column on Saturday. Therefore, I’m going to hold off for now talking about who I was going to vote for and why in the now postponed Congressional District 5 race. I’m pretty sure some of the good candidates we had in CD 5 find themselves in different Congressional districts and its possible more than 1 of them will get to Congress to help grow our Republican majority in Congress.

I also know short of an act of God, the US Senate race that has been flooded with negative ad will head to a June 27th run-off.

My support for US Congresswoman Julia Letlow’s US Senate bid hasn’t been altered at all by folks who for various reasons don’t want her to be elected. Some of these folks funding & running these negative ads against her are more than just annoyed that President Donald Trump endorsed Congresswoman Letlow for US Senate along with many others.

I’ve known her for well over a decade and she learned a lot from her deceased husband including how important it is to not forget that when you serve in elected office, it’s the “people’s seat.” Her record as Congresswoman has reflected that. Like most of Louisiana she has been an unwavering advocate for life…

…has no problem helping farmers when they need it…

…and has done what she could to help Louisiana and our Republican majority from her seat on the US House Appropriations Committee.

I’ve never doubted her faith, which has helped her navigate the challenges she’s faced personally and politically. I look forward to continuing to help where I can.

Changing races, a little over a year ago several conservative Republican friends that I trust in Caddo & Bossier Parishes came to me and let me know that Caddo Parish Commissioner and business leader John Atkins would be running for Public Service Commissioner to replace Foster Campbell who is thankfully termed out of serving in District 4. The districtstretches covers every Louisiana parish that has Interstate 20 in it and goes down to Sabine & Natchitoches Parish in the west and cuts east all the way over to Concordia Parish.

As I got to know him better over the last year, I can easily recommend him to all of you. He has faithfully served on the Caddo Parish Commission and has done plenty of business in rural Louisiana to understand the unique needs of smaller communities.

When I was in Shreveport last week, I saw him do a TV interview where he emphasized the need for low power rates and low water bills. He understands the practical needs of both consumers and business, and it will be refreshing to see a conservative Republican finally take this seat. He drew a minor primary challenge and a couple of Democrats who have not raised much money so we will have to vote for again in November for him but I’m looking forward to seeing him on the PSC.

In closing, we do to pray for wisdom in our Louisiana legislature as they navigate drawing new Congressional lines along with all the other business that they need to take care of in Baton Rouge.
