Former President Donald Trump has selected Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2024 election.Vance, 39, rose to national fame with his 2016 best selling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy." His background as a Marine Corps veteran, Yale Law School graduate, and tech entrepreneur aligns with Trump's focus on America-first policies and economic revitalization.
Trump made the announcement on Monday via his Truth Social network as the Republican National Convention commenced in Milwaukee.
"After careful consideration and weighing the talents of many others, I have concluded that Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio is best suited to serve as Vice President of the United States," Trump stated
Previously critical of Trump, Vance has since emerged as a loyal advocate. Vance secured a Senate seat in 2022, championing Trump's "Make America Great Again" agenda. Vance is known for his advocacy on trade, foreign policy, and immigration, he has become a respected voice within conservative circles.
"J.D. will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond," Trump emphasized
Governor Jeff Landry released a statement Monday congratulating Vance and commending him for his previous leadership in the Senate. “I am confident he will excel in his new role as Vice President and look forward to working with him to Make America Great Again!” Landry stated.
His selection as Trump's running mate positions him as the first millennial on a major-party ticket bringing a new perspective and youthful energy to the campaign, resonating with voters concerned about the future of American leadership.
The decision comes amid heightened political tensions following an attempted attack on Trump during a recent rally, raising concerns about political violence across states.
The Republican National Committee welcomed Vance to the ticket, saying that he would be a strong addition to the team. The committee praised Vance's commitment to promoting American values and his experience in business and government.
