In 2024, Governor Jeff Landry and the Legislature delivered the largest tax cut in state history, moving Louisiana off a three-bracket system that topped out at 4.25 percent and onto a flat 3 percent individual income tax. It was a real win for working families and small businesses, and it proved that meaningful tax reform is possible here. But it was also just a first step. Louisiana remains one of a shrinking number of states that still taxes work and retirement income at all, while Texas and Florida, the two states pulling the hardest on our population and our businesses, tax neither.

That gap matters more every year. Every young family weighing whether to stay in Louisiana or move west to Houston, every retiree deciding whether their pension stretches further in Florida, every business owner comparing site locations, is running the same math. A state income tax is a permanent disadvantage in that competition, and half measures don't close it.

The good news is that full elimination is on the table right now. Governor Landry has publicly called on the Legislature to finish what it started, and legislative leadership has raised a fair point in response. Each half point of the income tax represents roughly $500 million a year in state revenue, and nobody serious wants Louisiana to blow a hole in its budget. That is exactly why the moment calls for a real, funded plan rather than letting the conversation stall out.

That is exactly what a new petition from Smart Money Louisiana is asking for. It calls on Governor Landry and legislative leaders to commit to a credible, funded path to phasing out the income tax entirely, paired with the spending discipline needed to make it responsible rather than reckless. It is not asking anyone to wave a magic wand. It is asking Louisiana's leaders to put their name behind a plan and actually follow through.

Louisiana workers deserve to keep more of their paychecks. Retirees who spent a career here deserve to keep more of their pensions. And Louisiana needs every advantage it can get to compete with income-tax-free states for jobs, businesses, and the young families who keep leaving for them. The 2024 cut proved this Legislature can act. Now it needs to hear that voters expect it to finish the job.
